Menopause Symptoms and Memory Loss

Menopause Symptoms and Memory Loss

While you may experience the misery of hot flashes and mood swings as you enter menopause, one thing you can't blame on the "change" is memory loss.

In the latest study that exonerates menopause as a cause of impairing the ability to recall, Taiwanese researchers compared the memory of hundreds of women before they had any menopausal symptoms to their memory as they entered menopause.

They found the women who were going through the menopausal process scored as well or nearly as well on five different cognitive function tests. Results of the study are to be presented Oct. 4 at the American Neurological Association annual meeting in Toronto.

"When women go into perimenopause, they don't need to worry about cognitive decline," said Dr. Jong-Ling Fuh, an attending physician at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and an associate professor of Yang-Ming University School of Medicine.

The researchers said the myth of memory loss during menopause is a perception some women have because as they went through menopause, they felt their memory wasn't as sharp as it had been before. Studies suggesting that hormone replacement therapy might protect against dementia strengthened that belief. However, a large study later found that in older women, hormone replacement therapy not only didn't help protect women from dementia, but could actually increase the risk.

To try to answer the question of whether menopause did have any effect on memory, Fuh and her colleagues studied nearly 700 premenopausal women living on a group of rural islands between Taiwan and China. The Taiwanese government restricted access to these islands until the 1990s, so the authors report that the study's population was nearly homogeneous, which would help rule out other potentially causative factors of memory loss.

The women were between the ages of 40 and 54. None of them had had a hysterectomy, and none took hormone replacement therapy during the study.

All took five cognitive tests designed to assess their memory and cognitive skills at the start of the study, and then again 18 months later.

During the study period, 23 percent of the women began to have symptoms of menopause.

The researchers then compared the memory of the women who had entered menopause to those who had not, and found very little difference. In four of the five tests, there were no statistically significant differences in the two groups of women.

Only on one test was the difference statistically significant, and that difference, said Fuh, was very slight. This test was designed to assess verbal memory and involved showing the women 70 nonsensical figures. Some of the figures were repeated during the test, while most were not. The women were asked whether they had seen the figure earlier.

"For women, menopause does not mean you'll develop memory loss," said Dr. Raina Ernstoff, an attending neurologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. As you're going through perimenopause and experiencing symptoms like hot flashes, she said, you may feel lousy and have trouble sleeping, which might temporarily affect your cognitive skills.

"I don't think declining estrogen levels are what causes memory loss," said Dr. Steven Goldstein, an obstetrician/gynecologist at New York University Medical Center in New York City. "It's not like your memory is bopping along, doing fine and then takes this big dive during menopause, like bone density can."

Both Ernstoff and Goldstein said they weren't aware of many women who believed that menopause might cause significant memory loss. They also both felt that results from this group of women who were so homogeneous might not apply to different groups of women, such as those living in more industrialized society. And they both said that other factors that weren't studied could play a role in memory loss, such as hypertension, which can contribute to vascular dementia.

Ernstoff also pointed out that the education backgrounds can play a large role in memory loss. Fuh acknowledged the researchers did attempt to control the data for educational differences.

In order to be able to boast about your nails, you have to make them healthy. The lacks of hydration or, on the contrary, too much exposure to moisture make you nails become very fragile, especially at their tops. Heat, detergents, and the nail polish remover are the worst enemies of your healthy nails. If you are not able to wear protective gloves each time you wash the dishes, immediately after doing it you should use a hydrating lotion for hands. Try not to keep your hands in the water for a long time when you wash the dishes, swim, or even when you take a bath. Nails have the capacity to absorb 20-25 % of their weight when in water, and constrict when dry. If this process repeats often, your nails become weaker. Nevertheless, beyond prevention, there are also natural solutions to revive problem nails:

  • Once or twice a day offer your nails and fingers an olive oil massage. Dwell on your cuticles and sides of your nails. Massaging improves blood flow at the nail level, and it works like a medicine.
  • Heat up some till oil and use it as a nail mask. Leave it work for about 15-20 minutes and then wash it with warm water. Apply this treatment once at most twice a week. Do not forget that too much hydration for your nails make them week.
  • Wear you nails short for a couple of weeks, to help the recovery process. The shorter they are, the risk to tear them becomes smaller.
  • For hydration, choose a lotion rich in urea and lactic acid, an ideal treatment in nail treatment.

  • If you have torn cuticles or small wounds at you nails, then the usual manicure treatments can lead to infections. A handy way to treat this is massaging your nails with worm honey for 15-29 minutes. Honey works against bacteria, and prevents any potential infection. Apply this treatment at night, before going to bed.
  • Allow your nails to breathe. Try not to use nail polish for at least a month. For more severe cases, you may even need three months. Not only that nail polish dries the nails, but also the remover attacks their roots.
  • If you want you nails whiter, apply a pledged with some apple vinegar on each nail and massage them. Another way is to treat your nails with a mild solution of peroxide hydrogen, once a week.

  • For stronger nails, use a garlic paste for a couple of minutes a day.
  • If you have a nail polish addiction, use this treatment for nail strengthening: add 8 drops of lemon, 5 drops of iodine in a bottle of taintless nail polish. Blend it and leave it for a day or so. Then apply it in a thin layer every day for 7 days. Then remove the nail varnish.

  • To get stronger nails, try a diet which consists in foods rich in vitamin B, like cauliflower, peanuts and duckweed. Have these vegetables fresh at least twice a day. Absorbed vitamin B encourages the development of strong and healthy nails. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend an appropriate product.
  • If you want your nail polish to dry faster, apply a thin layer of baby oil too.

Did you know that...?
  • nails grow about an eighth of a centimeter a month;
  • fingernails develop faster than toenails;
  • if you are right-handed, the nails from your right hand grow faster than the ones from your left hand; the reverse is valid for left-handed ;
  • nails grow faster during summer and pregnancy;
  • after 35 years old, nails tend to become naturally more fragile.

About Moms - Prenatal and Maternity Leave

The baby's bones continue to increase in length and width. This thing doesn't have to be done in the account of your skeleton and teeth. You should have milk and cheese daily, in order to ensure the necessary calcium level for your child, so do not neglect:
  • your weight: continue to measure it regularly
  • the urine checkup

You are only a few weeks away from your birth term. You will soon start your maternity leave.

The maternity leave is not a luxury. You feel a lot heavier because of your increased uterus, very tired because of the blood circulation and breathe, due to the fact that your organs are more crowded then usually. Take advantage of this leave to rest a lot and continue to prepare yourself financially and mentally for your baby's birth.

Myer expects high use of the parental leave provision, with female employees accounting for 81 per cent of its work force (file photo).

Soon, you will have to say goodbye to your work colleagues, because you will not see them for quite a while. When they will see you again in a couple of months, you will be a different person, hard to recognize: from a very tired, fat-looking person, you will become a young mother, happy and feeling in shape.

During the maternity leave:
  • you should rest as much as possible; try to avoid any activity that can lead to a premature birth; if nature decided that the gestation period is 9 months long, it means that 9 months are enough for the baby's organs to become completely mature;
  • continue with the relaxation and breath exercises, prepare the baby's room; it is better for him to sleep in a different room than yours; a baby should have his own room; if you are concerned at the thought that maybe you will not hear him, you may place his bed closer to your room, and leave the door open.
  • think in advance about the baby's place to sleep and eat; his coming into your home is not an easy thing to happen, so it is best to organize in advance as efficiently as you can
  • organize the life of your other children during the period that you will spend in the hospital
  • think about how you can be helped in the days that follow after coming home from the maternity; if you do not have a mother or other relatives who can help, you should look for other solutions, because immediately after coming home you will have to rest and continue with the gymnastics and exercise; for this you will need to have somebody to help you taking care of your baby from time to time.
